Zalesje Partisan Hospital Memorial Room

In Ostrožno Brdo, there is a memorial room with a museum collection dedicated to the Zalesje Partisan Hospital, where wounded fighters and local inhabitants were treated during the Second World War.

Hidden away in the forests of the Brkini Hills, the Zalesje Partisan Hospital was established in the first half of 1944. It was led by the Russian doctor Dr Magomed Gadzhiev – Miša. In the Šmagur Valley, a well-concealed bunker was built with sleeping quarters and an operating table, a kitchen, and a hut that could accommodate around 22 wounded patients.
The end of the Zalesje Partisan Hospital began in November 1944, when a German unit discovered the kitchen. In January of the following year, the partisan hospital became part of the Snežnik Slovenian War Partisan Hospital (SVPB-S), and its story has survived to the present day.
The story of the Zalesje Partisan Hospital can be explored in the memorial room in Ostrožno Brdo. Visitors can also join a guided tour to the reconstructed huts in the Šmagur Valley.

In addition to the collection, visitors can follow a marked forest trail (approximately 1.5 km) into the heart of the Brkini forests and visit the reconstructed hospital facilities, including the kitchen, dugout shelter, and hut for the wounded. The trail is easy and well marked.

You can find out more about the hospital in the leaflet.
