Sport fishing - River Reka
The Reka Valley divides the Brkin Hills from the Snežnik Mountains. Before the river disappears into the depths of the Škocjan Caves, its shady course with the dams of old sawmills and mills offers an exceptional fishing experience.
The Reka River is a mixed salmonid–cyprinid fishing water. In its deep pools, anglers can catch impressive specimens of the native marble trout (Salmo trutta marmoratus), wild carp, and northern pike. In the shallower sections, where the river flows through fast-moving rapids, beautiful brown trout, hybrid trout, rainbow trout, chub, and Italian barbel (Barbus plebejus) await.
The fish in the Reka River are no easy catch—they demand a great deal of patience, persistence, and skill from every angler.
Suitable fly-fishing locations on the Rijeka can be found from Ilirska Bistrica all the way to the Škocjanske Caves, including Novak's Mill near Topolc, locations below the villages of Smrje and Prem, near the bridge to Ostrožno Brdo and further afield in the Vrem valley.
