Podtabor

Podtabor lies beneath a mighty wall, where the remains of a prehistoric hillfort can still be seen today. Below the cliff and at the end of the village, the numerous springs of the Podstenjšek River are awakened by the rain.

At the beginning of the rock overhang called Pod Črmukljo is a Mesolithic site. In front of the cave, the remains of an old fortress, Podtabor Castle, mentioned by J.V. Valvasor, are clearly visible.

The scenic route from the village westwards takes you through a tunnel under the Uršja Cave and on to Šilentabor and Šembije. At the top, you will enjoy magnificent views of Vremščica, Slavnik and Žabnik, the Brkini Mountains and the Reka Valley. In the village, at the Brusovi homestead, you can find one of the oldest grapevines in Slovenia — a 300-year-old beauty that still produces a plentiful harvest.
