Draga Karolina Cottage on Veliki Snežnik

The mountain hut is located just below the summit of Veliki Snežnik (1,796 m), the highest peak of the Snežnik mountain range. In 1958, the Ilirska Bistrica Mountaineering Association took over a former military observation post on the summit and converted its remains into a mountain shelter, which officially opened in 1961. Additional rooms were added in the following years, and a major extension and renovation project began in 1977, with all works completed in 1994.

The panoramic view from Veliki Snežnik is among the finest in Slovenia. To the northeast lie Kočevski Rog, the Gorjanci Hills, Medvednica and Ivanščica. To the east rises Mount Klek, while to the southeast the view stretches across Mala Kapela and Gorski Kotar to the Kvarner Gulf and the island of Cres. Looking south, beyond the Reka Valley and the Brkini Hills, the entire Istrian Peninsula unfolds, from Mount Učka to the western Istrian coast. To the southwest stands Mount Slavnik, while to the west the distant silhouettes of the Dolomites, the Carnic Alps, the Zilje Alps, and the Julian Alps with Mount Triglav dominate the horizon. To the north, the view reaches the Karavanke, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and the Pohorje Hills. Just below the summit lie the Lož Valley, Lake Cerknica and the Bloke Plateau. On exceptionally clear nights, the lights of the Kvarner coast are visible, as well as those stretching from the Brijuni Islands to Portorož, Piran and Koper, and from Monfalcone to the Venetian Lagoon.
