Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter dominates the skyline of Ilirska Bistrica. Originally built in the Middle Ages and remodelled several times over the centuries, the church consists of a Gothic chancel with external buttresses, a rectangular nave, and a bell tower adjoining the façade. The interior was redecorated and painted by T. Kralj in 1961. The large cemetery contains the graves of important families of Ilirska Bistrica. The Žnideršič–Košomat family tomb, the work of the renowned architect Jože Plečnik, stands against the church’s eastern wall.
