Pregarje

Pregarje is the central village of the Brkini region. From here, scenic roads follow the ridgelines through Tatre towards the Vreme Valley, while another route leads across the hills to Obrov in the Matarsko Podolje valley.
The village was established centuries ago on pastures owned by the Count of Prem. According to local tradition, a shepherd named Lovrenc built a small chapel beneath Karlovica Hill, where people gathered to pray. The Italian verb pregare, meaning "to pray," is believed to have inspired the village's name.
Today, Pregarje is home to the Church of St. Lawrence, dating back to the 17th century. Since the 18th century, the surrounding landscape has been renowned for its abundant orchards and fruit production. The village is particularly famous for Brkini plum brandy (Brkinski slivovec), which enjoys protected geographical indication (PGI) status, and lies along the Brkini Fruit Route, celebrating the region's rich fruit-growing tradition.
