Church of St. Peter

The Church of St. Peter dominates the skyline of Ilirska Bistrica. Originally built in the Middle Ages and later remodelled several times, the church consists of a Gothic chancel with external buttresses, a rectangular nave, and a bell tower attached to the façade. In 1961, the interior was redesigned and decorated with frescoes by the renowned Slovene artist Tone Kralj.
The large cemetery surrounding the church contains the graves of many prominent families from Ilirska Bistrica. Leaning against the church's eastern wall is the Žnideršič–Košomat tombstone, designed by the distinguished architect Jože Plečnik.
